Ireland's first factory built Passive House was built by Viking-House in Clonmel, Co Tipperary. It was erected on site in 2 weeks. The triple glazed windows, electricity conduits and internal Fermacell boards were factory fitted to PassiveHaus standards. The house achieves a PHPP calculation of 11kwh/m2/ annum and an airtightness figure of 0.58/hr at 50Kp,well within the PassivHaus criteria. The house is built on a Passive Slab with the PassivHaus certified foundation system making it a thermal bridge free construction. The HRV air is pre-heated in the conservatory by a few degrees in the coldest winter days.

Cloughjordan Ecovillage includes over 50 diverse low-energy homes on one site, with an average annual bill for heat and hot water of €247 in 2013. Many of these will be open to visitors during the Open Doors event (7-9 Nov 2014) but only by appointment. Please register here - for 'Cloughjordan Ecovillage' - to book all Open Doors visits to homes in the ecovillage. Details of about 30 homes are given on this website, below the list of Events. However, these entries are purely for background information - some of the homes listed may not be open during the Open Doors event, though most will. We regret that we cannot take bookings for visits to specific houses. Please park on Main Street and proceed on foot to Django's Hostel in the ecovillage to register for visits to individual homes. A series of visits will leave from Django's at hourly intervals from 1130 to 1630h (final departure). A variety of homes will be open on each day but they won't all be open all day, so the earlier you arrive, the more different homes you'll have chance to see. You should therefore book for as many time slots as you need, not just for the one corresponding to your arrival time. Please include children in the number booked - but please note that these visits are not suitable for young children. Priority will be given to visitors who have prebooked via this NZEB website. We encourage rail travel from Dublin: the 0900h train from Heuston on Friday or Saturday will get you to Cloughjordan station at 1047h. It's a 15' walk from there to the ecovillage, which leads off the middle of Main Street. The train fare is €9.99 each way if booked on-line at least 3 days in advance. (Individual and group visits to the ecovillage can be arranged at other times by emailing education@thevillage.ie or by calling +353 (0)86 7732 158. We also offer free tours at 3pm on Sat & Sun afternoons. These do not include home visits, so are more suitable for younger children.)
